Suicide Prevention Training for Schools

Suicide Prevention Training for Schools
February 5th, 2025
Mental Health
Mental health is not just an individual struggle—it’s a community responsibility. That’s why my family is honored to partner with Onondaga County and Oswego Health to launch the first county-wide suicide prevention training for all school staff in Onondaga and Oswego Counties.
On March 31st, we will gather at the Oncenter for a critical training session led by Dr. Dan Reidenberg, an expert from the International Association of Suicide Prevention. This program is designed specifically for educators, administrators, and school personnel, equipping them with the skills to recognize warning signs, provide vital support, and foster a safer environment for students facing mental health challenges.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people aged 10 to 24. That statistic alone underscores the urgency of this initiative. When we empower those who work with our children every day, we take a powerful step toward prevention, intervention, and hope.
This initiative wouldn’t be possible without the commitment and dedication of so many. A special thank you to my parents, Nancy and Vincent Lobdell, for sharing their story and resources to support others. Deep gratitude to County Executive Ryan McMahon for championing this cause, as well as Ann Rooney, Jamie Leszczynski, Michael Backus, and Margaret Barclay for their instrumental roles in making this event a reality.
I invite all school personnel to join us in this effort. Let’s come together to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and save lives.
